Lake Como offers options for every style and budget:

Let’s go through the best proposal locations on the lake and discuss the pros and cons of each.
Free Proposal Locations in Lake Como
Villa Olmo in Como
Villa Olmo is one of the easiest and most accessible proposal locations in Lake Como, especially for couples visiting from Milan for a day trip. The villa combines elegant neoclassical architecture with wide open gardens directly overlooking the lake. Tall trees, symmetrical pathways, lakeside promenades, and soft sunset reflections create a timeless Italian atmosphere perfect for romantic and natural-looking photographs.
In spring and summer, the gardens become vibrant and full of life, while during quieter mornings the area feels peaceful and cinematic despite being in the city of Como.

- Easily reachable from Milan by train
- Located in the largest city on the lake
- Open to the public with no photography restrictions
- Beautiful park and gardens
- Direct lake access

Cons
- Very crowded on sunny days
- Not private
- Floral setups are not allowed
- People may be sunbathing or picnicking in the background

Parco Civico Teresio Olivelli
This little lakeside park in Tremezzo feels incredibly authentic and relaxed. With its palm trees, flower beds, stone pathways, and direct views over the water toward Bellagio, it captures the classic charm people dream about when imagining Lake Como.
The atmosphere here is less formal than the villas, making it perfect for couples who want a romantic but more natural and spontaneous proposal experience. During golden hour, the light reflects beautifully across the lake and creates a soft glow around the mountains.

- Reachable by ferry
- Decor setups are allowed

Cons
- Far from major cities if you are not staying on the lake
- Public and often crowded
- Locals frequently sunbathe in the area
- I usually travel here only for shoots of 2+ hours

Bellagio Lakeside
Bellagio is often called the “Pearl of Lake Como, ” and it truly feels magical. The combination of narrow cobblestone streets, luxury hotels, elegant stairways covered in flowers, and panoramic lake views creates endless possibilities for photographs.
One of the best things about Bellagio is variety within just a short walk we can capture romantic lakeside views, charming Italian alleyways, luxury architecture, hidden gardens, and quiet corners away from the crowds. It is ideal for couples who want their proposal gallery to feel diverse, stylish, and unmistakably Italian.

Varenna Lakeside
Varenna has one of the most romantic atmospheres on the entire lake. The colorful houses built directly above the water, tiny historic streets, ivy-covered walls, and lakeside cafés create a very intimate and cinematic feeling.
The famous lakeside promenade is especially beautiful in the early morning, when the water is calm and the town slowly wakes up. Varenna works perfectly for couples who want their proposal photos to feel emotional, cozy, and authentically Italian.

Pros
- Authentic Italian atmosphere
- Beautiful colorful houses
- Public pier perfect for photos
- Hidden locations away from the crowds

Cons
- Extremely crowded during high season
- Long lines and heavy tourism on sunny days
- Tourists often appear in the background
Iconic Villas in Lake Como (With Photography Fees)
Lake Como is one of the most visited destinations in the world, and many iconic villas now require photography permits to manage tourism and preserve the locations.
While the fees may initially seem high, the experience and exclusivity are often absolutely worth it.

Villa del Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello is probably the most iconic proposal location on Lake Como and for good reason. Perched dramatically on a peninsula surrounded by water, the villa offers breathtaking panoramic views from every angle.
The famous terraces, sculpted gardens, and historic architecture create an atmosphere that feels luxurious, cinematic, and incredibly romantic. Every corner of the villa looks like a movie scene, especially during sunset when the golden light hits the arches and pathways overlooking the lake.

Villa Pessina is one of the hidden luxury gems of Lake Como. Unlike public villas, this location offers complete privacy and exclusivity, allowing couples to fully enjoy the experience without tourists around.

Bonus Secret Weapon: A Private Boat Proposal
Honestly, one of the best proposal experiences on Lake Como is simply renting a private boat.

The boat itself becomes the location — and because it moves, we can photograph multiple iconic backdrops within one session:
- Villa del Balbianello

Pricing
- From €350/hour depending on the boat model

Pros
- Can often be booked last minute
- The best lake views are from the water

And by the way, for bookings of 2+ hours (for example, combining a villa and a boat session), I am happy to include drone photography as a complimentary add-on.

Questions and answers
How can I book a shoot?
Booking is simple! Just send me a message, and we’ll agree on a date and time for your photoshoot. I will then send you a contract to secure your booking. A deposit of 50% is required to confirm your reservation.
Once the contract is signed and the deposit is paid, we can start planning your shoot in detail. The remaining balance is due before the session.
I operate an official business in Italy and provide a formal invoice for every service.
Can I cancel or reschedule a shoot?
Rescheduling is possible up to 24 hours before the scheduled shoot and only in case of bad weather. Please contact me as soon as possible to arrange a new date.
If you need to cancel, please note that the deposit is non-refundable.
I strive to make the process smooth and clear, so we can ensure your photoshoot goes perfectly.
Do you help with planning a proposal?
I absolutely assist with everything related to the photoshoot: timing, location recommendations, and shoot planning. I’m also happy to share contacts of trusted vendors around Lake Como and Milan.
However, if you’re looking for help with planning the entire experience—such as choosing and booking a location within your budget, arranging a boat, makeup artist, florist, musicians, or a restaurant for a post-shoot dinner—you might consider our additional planning and coordination service provided by my team.
Do I need any permits for photoshoots in Lake Como?
Quite often, yes. Many private villas, gardens, and boat services—particularly in the Lake Como area—require advance permission for photography. Please be aware that a photography permit for the Villa Balbianello starts from 400 euros, for the Villa Monstero from 300 euros, and from the Villa Melzi from 420 euros; these permits are not included in my photography fees and must be arranged by a client. Since the most sought-after locations fill up fast, it’s always best to arrange access well ahead of time.
What time of the day is best for photos?
The most flattering light usually happens shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. Because lighting shifts quickly here, choosing the right moment can transform photos from simply beautiful into truly striking, editorial-quality imagery.
What happens if it rains?
Weather here can shift unexpectedly, so there’s no need to worry. I always prepare a backup option—this could be a sheltered location, an alternative spot, or an adjusted schedule—so we can still create beautiful images regardless of conditions.
Can our photos be private?
As the photographer, I retain full copyright to the images and reserve the right to use them in my portfolio, website, and social media.
If you prefer to keep your photos completely private and not shared publicly, a 50% privacy fee applies. Please let me know in advance if you would like to add this option to your booking.
